Vapo's story began with firewood in January 1940. Back then, the government centralized the procurement of firewood and timber for state institutions with Vapo’s predecessor, the Timber Office of the Board of Administration of the Finnish State Railways. In 1945 the name was changed to the State Fuel Office and the abbreviation Vapo was taken into use. This became the company’s official name in the 1960s.
Vapo took the first steps in peat production in the mid-1940s, when batches of fuel peat which had come into the state’s possession were supplied to consumers. Vapo started peat production proper in the 1970s. The heating business was launched in the 1980s, followed by the environment business in the early 1990s.
Today Vapo is a leading developer of bioenergy in Finland and the Baltic Sea region and the world’s leading peat industry company. Our products and services are a key part of Finland’s energy make-up and we are a major regional employer throughout Finland.
